Black Friday
Things overheard in line during the seven-and-a-half-hour wait outside of Toys R Us this weekend:
4:40pm “Oh, wow, Hugh. There’s no one here yet. Do you think we’re a little early?” – Jess
5:45pm “Are you here for Zhu Zhu pets?” – a gruff-looking college kid
5:46pm “What’s a Zhu Zhu pet?” – Hugh, whispering to me
6:33pm “Yeah, those Zhu Zhu pets are so hard to get – but the manager said they’d have enough for the first 100 people in line tonight at midnight.” – an Ecstatic Dad, eighth in line
7:50pm “Yes, yes, definitely getting a Zhu Zhu pet.” – Hugh, in response to the ninth person to ask
9:00pm “Hugh, do you think anyone saw me pee in our travel toilet in the van?” – Jess, unable to wait three more hours to use the bathroom
9:36pm “You like chitlins, Jessica? I ain’t ever known a white person to like chitlins before.” – my new friend in line, Elsa
10:01pm “Hey, Manager! See those people over there! They’re trying to bust in the store. You need to DO something.” – a man behind me in line, wearing an orange hood
10:40pm “If I don’t get a Zhu Zhu pet, I’m going to ************ hurt someone.” – an Angry Grandma, twenty-fourth in line
11:09pm “Look, people, I’ve already had four people arrested tonight for skipping in line. Get BACK IN THE LINE.” – Security Guard
11:380pm “How many people are in line now? About 800?” – Hugh, scanning the crowd and feeling very pleased about BEING FIRST IN LINE
11:53pm “Ma’am, here is your ticket for the Zhu Zhu pet. They are being held at the front of the store. Show this ticket to us and we’ll get it for you when you leave.” – Manager
12:00pm “Go.” – Hugh

wow! i never go shopping on black friday, i did once for an elmo and a furby about 10 years ago and had to wait in line 8 hours to get it AND even though i was a teenager at the time i almost got beat up over the toys….
BUT
this year i am unemployed and money is super-tight. My son only wanted one thing – a Thomas the Train Bike, and he also asked for books as a back up plan. Toys-R-Us had Thomas the Train Bikes on sale for 50% off during the 5AM sale, and so i decided to try and go and get one. I arrived around 3am and the store and parking lot was really crowded, but because they had already been opened for the midnight sale they didn’t make me wait outside. I went in and it took about an hour to find the bike, but i got the last one and walked around with in in my cart until the 5am sale started. I check out with the bike (and 4 books that i found while waiting!) at like 5:02 and was home by 5:33am.
i went in expecting this to be a horrible experiance, and thought i might end up trampled to death… but all in all no one was rude and i got Sam the bike he really wanted AND some Thomas books too!
sounds like you got everything you wanted too, and it looks like you weren’t too miserable in line either!

you got a zhu zhu? i am sooooo jealous. my son really loves them (he already has one that his grandma bought off of ebay for $24!!!), but i am not a dedicated enough mom to stand in line for any huge length of time to acquire one!
Are zhu zhu pets the beanie babies of 11 years ago? If so, I’m glad my kids don’t know about them. I still have bins and bins of beanies that I was certain would pay for my son’s college. Ha!

I was there too! However, I did not get there till 11:45pm. Craziness I tell you! The line to check out was the scary part! Only took us 2hrs in line…. Stupid blue arrows!
It’s wonderful that you found a man as crazy as you are! LOL! I am saying that lovingly. Becuase I am jealous. My husband would never do that with me. Sooooo – did you get a Zhu Zhu? I would have after that, even though I never heard of it, just so I could say I had one. OR maybe I’d just sell it on ebay for twice the price. hehehe.

Anyway, I’ve never stood in line for anything, and I avoid Black Friday shopping whenever possible. I hate crowds, hate shopping, hate rudeness, pretty much hate the whole experience. :-p So it’s probably a good thing that Sarah doesn’t know what a Zhu Zhu pet is either!
